KWEISI MFUME CONTINUES TO PUSH FOR PROGRESS
Mfume, A&S ’84 (MLA), a Baltimore native who received a masters degree from JHU in 1984, returned to Congress in 2020 to represent Maryland’s 7th District. A lot has changed since 1996 when he left Congress to become the NAACP’s president and chief executive officer. Today, Democrats and Republicans are stuck in “my-way-or-the-highway, take-no-prisoners” postures that result most often in stalemate, he says. “You need two to tango. It doesn’t mean we’re going to reach unanimity. But we should try to reach a consensus.”
